Botox, Dermal Fillers and Injectable Treatments
Author: Uzm. Dr. Oya Oylum Argun, dermatologist

Are Botox and fillers the same treatment?
"Injectables" is not one procedure. It covers several separate treatments, done for different reasons and in different layers of the skin. Which one suits you depends on the concern.
What does Botox do?
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces muscle movement. It is used for lines that form with facial expression. The effect is on the muscle underneath, not on the skin itself. If a line appears when you frown or smile, it responds. If it has become a permanent crease in the skin, the approach changes. The effect is temporary and is repeated at intervals.
What do dermal fillers do?
Dermal filler deals with volume. With age, some areas of the face lose tissue support; filler replaces that support. The density of the product and the depth at which it is placed decide the result. The product used in the lips is not the same as the one used on the cheekbones.
What is a liquid facelift?
Lifting injections and the liquid facelift may sound like a product name, but they describe a way of planning: treatments at the load-bearing points of the face are considered together. The face is looked at as a whole rather than one area at a time.
How is the amount of treatment decided?
In these treatments, judgement comes before technique. The aim is to soften the features and bring back balance. How much is appropriate is decided after facial anatomy and expectations have been discussed together at the consultation.
Is Botox the same as botulinum toxin?
What most people call Botox is the treatment described above as botulinum toxin; the two names mean the same thing. At the practice in Muratpaşa, Antalya, Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Oya Oylum Argun performs the injections herself. Which treatment suits you is discussed after your history is taken and your skin is assessed.
Frequently asked questions
Do wrinkles get worse when you stop Botox?
No, when Botox is stopped the face returns to how it looked before treatment. Botox temporarily reduces the nerve signal to the muscle. The effect wears off by itself and the muscle goes back to its former movement. Wrinkles do not become deeper than they were before treatment. Ageing of the skin carries on naturally in the meantime.
Does Botox have side effects?
When a doctor performs it with the right indication and dose, side effects are mostly temporary. Bruising at the injection site and headache can occur, and a drooping eyelid is rare. The medicines you take and any other health conditions are asked about at the consultation. Whether the treatment suits you is decided on that basis.
Who cannot have Botox and filler?
Botox and filler are not given during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Botox is also not given in some muscle and nerve conditions, or when there is an infection in the treatment area. If you are planning a pregnancy, please say so at the consultation. Your medicines and other health conditions are asked about too, and the decision is made accordingly.
What should I look out for after Botox?
In the first hours after Botox, do not touch the treated area and do not lean forward; there is no restriction of this kind on the following days. Do not use a swimming pool for one day after the injection. This rule also applies to other injections such as filler and mesotherapy. Personal advice is given at the practice on the day of treatment.
Can I fly on the same day after Botox or filler?
Yes, flying on the same day after Botox or filler is possible. Filler is preferably done one or two days before the flight. If it is planned on the same day as dental treatment, Botox is the last procedure of the day, because you should not lean forward in the first hours. Your travel plans are discussed together at the consultation.
