Regenerative Treatments (PRP)

What is PRP?

PRP is prepared from your own blood. The blood sample is spun in a centrifuge and the platelet-rich portion is separated. Nothing is added from outside.

How does PRP work?

Platelets are known as the cells that stop bleeding. They also contain growth factors involved in tissue repair. The idea behind the treatment is to concentrate that repair signal where it is needed.

What is PRP used for?

In the skin it is used for tissue quality and vitality. On the scalp it is applied to the layer where the hair roots sit, in cases of hair loss.

What decides the result of PRP?

What affects the result is less the treatment itself than the underlying cause. If hair loss is caused by iron deficiency or a thyroid problem, that is assessed first. This is why a blood test may be requested before deciding on PRP.

Who should not have PRP?

The treatment may not be suitable with blood disorders, some medications or pregnancy. These are asked about at the consultation.

PRP is carried out at the practice in Muratpaşa, Antalya, by Dr. Oya Oylum Argun. Whether it is planned for hair or skin is decided at the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

What is done before PRP for hair loss?

First, the cause of the hair loss is investigated. Iron deficiency, thyroid problems, the period after a feverish illness and some medicines can cause hair loss. For this reason, blood tests may be requested before a decision on PRP. Commonly checked values include iron stores, thyroid hormones and some vitamins. Which tests are needed depends on the findings of the examination.

Does seasonal hair loss go away by itself?

Mostly yes, seasonal shedding usually settles within a few months. Hairs that entered the resting phase in summer shed in September and October. If shedding lasts for months, the hairline is receding or thinning appears in particular areas, the cause may not be seasonal. In that case an assessment is needed instead of waiting.

Do shampoos or hair oils help with hair loss?

Shampoos and hair oils alone do not stop hair loss. Shampoo stays on the scalp for only a few minutes and cannot change the cycle of the hair follicle. The effect of plant oils such as rosemary or castor oil has not been sufficiently proven. Changing products without finding the cause of the hair loss wastes time.

What should I bring to a hair loss consultation?

Bring a list of the medicines and creams you use, and any recent test results if you have them. A photo of the boxes is enough. Some blood pressure, rheumatism and hormone medicines can be linked to hair loss, so please be sure to tell us about your medicines. Also mention pregnancy, a planned pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Which doctor should I see for hair loss?

The first department to see for hair loss is dermatology. A dermatologist examines the scalp and hairs and, if needed, looks at them magnified with a dermatoscope. If an internal condition such as a thyroid problem or anaemia is found, care continues together with an internal medicine specialist. At the practice in Muratpaşa, Antalya, hair loss is assessed by Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Oya Oylum Argun.
