Laser hair removal targets the pigment in the hair root. The light from the device is absorbed by that pigment and turns into heat. The heat reaches the structure that produces the hair.
Sessions are spaced out because of the hair growth cycle. Hairs are not all in the same phase at once; some are growing, some are resting. The treatment only affects hair in the growth phase. So not every hair is reached in one session, and sessions are spaced according to the body area.
The colour and thickness of the hair decide the result. Because the target is pigment, dark and thick hair responds better. The response is limited in light, white and fine hair.
Skin colour also affects the energy setting. In darker skin the pigment at the surface also absorbs the light, and the setting is adjusted for this. On tanned skin the treatment may be postponed.
Some hair growth has a hormonal cause. Where hair increases over a short time or follows a male-type pattern, that is assessed first. Removing the hair while the cause remains is incomplete; your history is taken at the first visit and tests are requested if needed.
The treatment aims to reduce the number and thickness of hairs. How many sessions are needed and how much reduction to expect varies from person to person and cannot be said without an examination.
