Do shampoos or oils help with hair loss?

Shampoos and hair oils do not stop hair loss on their own. Hair loss has a cause, and changing products without finding that cause wastes time.

Shampoo stays on the scalp for only a few minutes. It cleans the scalp and can reduce dandruff and greasiness. It does not stay on long enough, or act strongly enough, to change the cycle of the hair root.

The effect of plant oils such as rosemary, coconut or castor oil on hair loss has not been proven well enough. Putting a lot of oil on the scalp can make dandruff and itching worse in some people.

What stops hair loss? The answer depends on the cause. Seasonal shedding often stops on its own. With iron deficiency or a thyroid problem, the cause is corrected. In inherited hair thinning, treatments recommended by the doctor are used.

If the shedding lasts longer than a few months, or the hair is visibly getting thinner, you need an assessment rather than trying more products.
