Types of moisturiser: what does each one do?

A moisturiser is not one single thing. It has three different jobs, and most products combine them. If dryness does not go away, the missing part is often the third layer.

A moisturiser is not one single thing. It has three different jobs, and most products combine them.

  • Drawing in water. Pulls water up from the lower layers and from the air. Used alone, it can backfire in dry air; it needs a sealing layer on top.
  • Softening. Fills the gaps in a rough surface. This is the layer that reduces the feeling of flaking and roughness.
  • Sealing. Forms a film on the surface and slows the evaporation of water. It is usually applied last.

If dryness does not go away, the missing part is often the third layer.
