Psoriasis is not contagious. It does not pass on by touching, by using the same towel or in a swimming pool.

Psoriasis is a long-term condition that appears when the immune system speeds up the renewal of skin cells. It produces raised, red areas with a clear edge and silvery-white scales on top.

It is most often seen on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. It can cause pitting and colour change in the nails. In some people it also affects the joints; if you have joint pain or swelling, you need to say so at the consultation.

Stress, a throat infection, some medicines, smoking and injuries to the skin can trigger a flare-up.

Does psoriasis go away? There is no treatment that removes it completely. With suitable treatment the condition can be kept under control for a long time. Creams, light therapy, or medicines taken by mouth or by injection are chosen according to how widespread it is.

A dermatologist looks after psoriasis. If the joints are affected too, it is followed together with a rheumatology specialist.
