Using a peel product at home: five rules

Do not try more than one new ingredient at once; if a reaction appears, the cause cannot be found. Which peel product suits your skin is decided at an examination.

  • Start one at a time. Do not try more than one new ingredient at once; if a reaction appears, the cause cannot be found.
  • Build up slowly. Start with one application a week and increase it as your skin tolerates it.
  • Do not stack products. Combining different peel products and strong ingredients in the same evening raises the risk of irritation.
  • Sun protection is a must. Skin that is renewing itself is more sensitive to ultraviolet; this step is not optional.
  • Stop if stinging and redness carry on. A brief tingle and a burning feeling that continues are different things. The second shows the barrier is under strain.

Which peel product suits your skin is decided at an examination.

Is the peel product from the pharmacy the same as a peel in a clinic? Products sold in pharmacies and shops are made for home use and have a low strength. A peel applied in a clinic is stronger, is chosen to suit the skin and is done under a doctor’s control.

The time to leave a home product on is the time written on its box. Leaving it on longer to get a stronger effect can cause a burn.

If the burning does not stop after use, the product is washed off with plenty of water and not used again. If there are blisters, scabbing or redness that lasts for days, you need to see a doctor.

This article is for general information and does not replace individual medical advice. The right approach for you is decided at the consultation.
