Most of the small brown spots on children’s faces are freckles. Freckles run in families, are common in fair-skinned children and get darker in the sun.
Freckles fade in winter and increase in number in summer. They are harmless and need no treatment. Protecting the skin from the sun reduces new ones appearing and stops them darkening.
Brown spots also have causes other than freckles:
- A light brown patch present from birth. On its own it is usually harmless. If there are several large light brown patches on the body, the child is shown to a paediatrician and a dermatologist.
- Birthmarks and moles. A spot that grows, or changes in colour or shape, is checked.
- Marks after irritation. Marks left after spots, insect bites or rubbing fade within months.
How do sun spots go away in children? Spot-lightening creams are not used in children. In children older than six months, a sunscreen suitable for children, a hat and shade around midday are the main precautions.
